G-Dubs Back In The GamePublished by
by Brett Hoover — posted on 12/28/2011 Seven years ago, the high school closest to The Armory — George Washington High at 192nd Street and Audubon Avenue — discontinued its track & field program. As Brian Towey of the New York Daily News writes that while the school lobby swells with track trophies, GW's state-of-the-art Mondo track has gotten little use of late. But with the help of the Armory Foundation, the sport has returned at the school. Said George Washington Athletic Director Jodie Ferguson, “[The Armory] suited us up and everything. They’ve fully supported us.” And not only are the athletes of GW back on the track, most of the team is also entered into Armory College Prep, which provides preparation and counseling for college readiness for track & field athletes in New York City. Tamieka Grizzle, who still holds the N.Y. state record in the 1,000-meter run (2:48.44), ran for the Trojans in the 1990s before earning All-America status at both Villanova and Florida. Upon learning that her high school program is back, she responded, "It's great to know that G-Dubs are back in the game!" We're pretty excited here at The Armory as well.
