It's early-season and many changes will take place, but some schools not accustomed to it have bragging rights on the NCAA Division I indoor lists as the calendar is poised to change. These include St. Peter’s, St. John’s and Pitt, all of which have athletes ranked No. 1 in their events.

Meantime, a NYC-area school accustomed to success, Stony Brook, has two athletes ranked first — New Zealand distance runners Eric Speakman and Lucy Van Dalen. Speakman, a freshman, has run a modest but leading 8:22.51 for 3,000, while Lucy, an established star currently Down Under for the holiday break, has already run 4:36.90 for one mile and 9:07.48 for 3k, both outstanding times.

The St. Peter's leader is Aaron Lucas, a senior from Union, N.J., who has long-jumped 24-5 3/4 to lead that event. He also cleared a PR 6-9 1/2 in the HJ.

For St. John's it's Molly Ellis, who ran 56.06 in the 400 in the Bill Ward Invitational at St. Anthony's High School. With the allowed adjustment for a flat track, it puts Ellis first with a converted time of 55.36.

The national leader in the men’s 60 hurdles is Kemar Clarke of Brooklyn, who has run 7.84. Clarke, a senior from South Shore, attends Bethune-Cookman in Florida, which means he will be in town in February for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory. B-C competes there.

A number of other current leaders will be in town for that meet, including Tavaris Tate of Mississippi State, No. 1 in the 200 (20.99) and 400 (47.18); Reggie Dixon of Hampton (6.67 60), and Cambrya Jones of Pitt (24.13 200). This will be the debut at The Armory both for Mississippi State and Tate.

Also deserving mention is David Slovenski of Princeton, who currently stands second on the early-season pole vault list at 17-7 ¼. Only one Ivy Leaguer has ever gone 18 feet, the 18-1 1/4 by Mamadou Johnson of Penn almost 20 years ago.
